How to Know You're Ready for the Next Level

The Progression

Level 1 → 2: Basic organization (consolidated data, dictionary, ownership). Level 2 → 3: Basic analytics (dashboards, quick answers, data-informed decisions). Level 3 → 4: Deep integration (connected systems, automatic flow, sophisticated analysis). Level 4 → 5: Predictive and advanced (future outcomes, advanced models, data-driven strategy).

When to Move vs. When to Wait

Move from 1→2 when data is mostly organized and you can answer basic questions. Move from 2→3 when dashboards are used and answer real questions. Move from 3→4 when dashboards are comprehensive and decisions are data-driven. Move from 4→5 when you have clean data, a dedicated team, and a clear prediction problem. Red flags: building dashboards before fixing data; integrating before organizing; hiring a specialist before generalist work is done; predicting before understanding the present.

Consolidate vs. Progress

Sometimes consolidate instead of progressing: fix broken dashboards, improve adoption, document what you've built, train the team. You're done with a level when basics work, you've stopped firefighting, the next problem is clear, and your team is ready. Reality: Level 1→2 and 2→3 each take 2-3 months; 3→4 takes 3-4 months; 4→5 is ongoing. Most companies get stuck at Level 3 — that's enough for many.
